CANINE BLOOD BANK

Currently Finland’s only dogs’ blood bank invokes owners to get new donors. Large dogs are usually seen fit to serve this purpose. The Bank is ran by a voluntary association in contact with Academic Animal Hospital in Helsinki. If the blood reserve is sufficient, it can be supplied also elsewhere in the country. Transferred blood has saved the lives of many seriously injured dogs. The donors are rewarded with a food bag and a Hero dog decoration. Around six hundred dogs have donated blood. It runs out every once in the while, especially during holidays. Then the lives of the pets that are in a need to be surgically treated are endangered.
